The History of Shoemakers Book and Coffee Shop

Following the closure of Temple Courts bookshop in 2002 a group of Newbury Christians met to express the importance of a Christian presence on the high street. As a result, The Christopher Shoemaker Christian Centre was set up as an independent trust under the banner of Christians Together in the Newbury Area (CTNA). Shoemakers, as it is known, opened its doors for the first time on 17 January 2004.

We believe that customer service and personal relationships are vitally important to our ministry and we seek to provide a visible witness making scriptural materials available in our shop as well as online.

By purchasing via our website you are also supporting our bricks and mortar shop.

Church partnership arrangements

We are pleased to offer the facilities of our shop to Churches who work in partnership with us to promote the wider use of Christian resources. We are willing to open the shop during the evening for any group wishing to visit for specific needs or out of general interest.

We offer full Sale or Return (S.O.R) facilities for special events and for regular church bookstalls. As a guide we suggest that 25% of the value of the goods on S.O.R. should be sold but have no other restriction on the quantity taken.

Churches who work in partnership with us will recommend books to support the teaching programme of their Church as appropriate, and they will afford us the opportunity to provide a quotation for any bulk requirements. We can provide Book reviews for Church Magazines which can be supplied electronically.

We believe we can offer the keenest prices available and our objective is to make resources available to our partner churches at the best possible prices and in the quickest time possible.

For Churches willing to partner with us we will setup an account and invoice goods on the instruction of nominated signatories. All invoices should be paid within 28 days with the exception of those for S.O.R. goods which should be paid on presentation. Discounts will be available to account holders on bookstalls and other qualifying purchases.
